It was mentioned in Philip Larkin's poem, MCMXIV, line 4, when he said 'as if they were stretched outside the Oval or Villa Park...', refering to the queues of people waiting to enlist in the Great War, from where none came came back, if any. When I got to football matches and see those queues, its just staggering and poignant to realise how many people were there lining up to die.
