First performance of a poem for Leeds by the Poet Laureate
September 27th at 7.30pm is the date to put in your diary. Join with others at a poetry and musical evening with Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson. The evening, to celebrate Leeds Parish Church becoming a Minster, has been sponsored by LCI and the Leeds Literary and Philosophical Society. As well as drawing on a wide range of writing, Carol Ann will be performing a poem for Leeds which has been written especially for the occasion.
Carol Ann Duffy is a Scottish poet and playwright, and Professor of Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is the winner of numerous poetry awards, and has been awarded an OBE and CBE. Currently she holds an honorary doctorate from 4 universities (Dundee, St Andrew’s, Hull and Warwick) and an honorary fellowship at Homerton College, Cambridge. Her poetry is widely studied in many British schools at GCSE and A level.
Her poetry is renowned for its exploration of everyday experience and fantasy, and in a uniquely subtle and creative way. She has written a number of plays and collaborated with Sasha Johnson Manning in producing the Manchester Carols, a series of Christmas songs premiered in Manchester Cathedral. During her time as Poet Laureate, her work has explored subjects as wide ranging as the death of the last two soldiers from World War One, the MPs’ expenses scandal, the Royal Wedding, the FIFA World Cup, and a poem for those who have lost their lives to HIV/Aids.
John Sampson, who joins Carol Ann Duffy, is a highly versatile professional musician who plays a variety of woodwind instruments – contemporary and medieval. His compositions draw on Celtic, jazz and classical traditions. He has performed in a wide variety of venues, and composed music for dance, drama and television. He has performed with Carol Ann Duffy on a number of occasions, and the combination of music and poetry has been described as jaunty, ebullient and mesmerising.
It promises to be a unique evening and a night to remember.
Tickets available from LCI and Leeds Parish Church at £5.00 (£2.50 concessions). Phone 0113 245 4700 or email: general@leedschurchinstitute.org to purchase them.
