Sun Scroll

(Public Art)

Sun Scroll is a 7 metre diameter stainless steel spiral sculpture located on Tottenham Marshes in Lee Valley Regional Park. It is unique collaboration between the artist, Anita Rivera, poet Katherine Gallagher and 30 year 2 pupils from St. Paul's & All Hallows Infant School who all took part in poetry workshops to produce poetic text inspired by their visit to the marshes.

The artist then inscribed their words in layers upon the stainless steel using an angle grinder as a pen, to form a new collective poem deconstructing and fragmenting the text which appears as remnants of the children's experience, a legacy of permanent memories.

As you walk around the spiral words appear and disappear with the refraction of the light. The sculpture itself reflects the surrounding environment, the material being suggestive of the industrial past of the marshes whilst at times appearing water- like, echoing the Lee Navigation which transverses the site. The spiral symbolizes a spiritual journey infused with elements of a physical journey which reveals the secret life of the marshes.
