Founded 1990 as a poetry magazine for the southern counties of England. Now has contributors from all parts of the UK and overseas. Published each April and October. Submission deadlines are the previous November 30 and May 31, and the selection process takes about eight weeks from those dates.
Royal 8vo, b&w photo cover, 64pp, saddle stitched, publishes about 60 poems per issue, plus a detailed profile of a southern poet. Also news, comment and reviews. No editor - different selectors are appointed for each issue, usually from poets published in SOUTH. The magazine is run by a volunteer management team and relies totally on subscriptions for its income. Maximum six poems per submission. Articles on poetry up to 800 words also considered. SOUTH makes a point of keeping in contact with its contributors - and they keep in contact with each other - through the launch readings for each issue, which are held in different parts of its region.
